ABOUT THE ARTIST
Anne Sanger (b. 1970, US) is an artist living in the Hudson Valley known for her abstract expressionist paintings. Her development as an abstract artist in the years since leaving her corporate job in the retail industry has led her to explore pastel drawing, liquid acrylic works on paper as well as larger-scale oil paintings on linen. Starting around the age of 5, Anne was obsessed with fashion and taught herself to draw by emulating the great fashion illustrators, a lineage that extends from René Gruau to Antonio Lopez. After completing her degree in fashion design at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning [DAAP], Anne struck out for New York City’s Garment District, where she worked for nearly 30 years in a career that ranged from design to product technology.
A spontaneous visit to Woodstock changed the course of her life when she rediscovered her roots as an artist, embarking on the study of oil painting, abstract drawing, printmaking and other foundational subjects. This led to a move upstate in 2017, where she settled into a new life of curating and making art. Happily, Anne is now a full-time artist, exploring her capacity to create and discover, translating what she sees in her mind’s eye into joyful self-expression on the canvas.

Devoted to the idea of creating works of distinctive beauty, using striking color combinations and strong line, she is influenced by her background in fashion as a designer and illustrator. There is an underpinning of gesture and exuberant color that forms the foundation of each work.
My interest lies in exploring the foundational principles of color and color juxtaposition in abstract painting. This in turn informs the shapes that develop as I explore color on the canvas, often mixing paints directly on the surface. I begin with a framework of drawing - gestural lines and declarative mark-making - which evolves over the weeks spent developing a work within a series of works in different sizes and on different types of surfaces.
What collectors of Anne’s work are saying…
Anne’s work brings so much joy to myself & my physical surroundings. The creative, vibrant color palette and brush movement reminds of springtime, of light and balance… I love having Anne’s work in my office to help brighten up the everyday even through darker days.

I’m drawn to the boldness of the colors and how perfectly they complement each other. Because of the abstract nature of the piece, I discover a new shape or color each time I look at it. The layered composition—especially where the underlying work peeks through—adds depth and makes it endlessly interesting.

I like the colors - but also the movement in all of the paintings, [many of which] have a circular energy which I vibe with.
- Renée
There's so much movement, yet it seems so well balanced within the composition. It's like having my very own Frankenthaler/Pollock and looks fantastic with my mid-century modern furniture. So happy to have it in my home!
